RadEye B20 and B20-ER Multi-Purpose Survey Meters

it is manufactured by Thermo Scientific and are:

are modern, compact, multi-purpose handheld contamination meters for alpha, beta, gamma and X-ray radiation.

High-end standalone meters are designed to exceed the most demanding user expectations.
In the CNN TV piece they were being used to detect radiation on food in Japan. I also found them online and one could buy one of these online. However, I wouldn't know how to use one unless one went through all the different types of radiation. Also, one would have to know what readings might be dangerous while monitoring the different types of radiation. However, I think this sort of meter might become a necessity not only in Japan but possibly worldwide. As this whole thing drags on day after day more and more Japanese fresh ground water, vegetables, land, people, ocean etc. are being damaged, with some parts being damaged likely for hundreds or thousands of years at this point depending upon the level of contamination ongoing.

Japan is now telling people not to drink any local well water or tap water within 20 kilometers from the Nuclear plant. They are also telling people that the ocean is contaminated with radiation 60 kilometers in radius out to sea from the plant as well.
