You didn’t think that a silly thing like being off the week of Easter would stop the whistle-blowing train that is Last Week Tonight with John Oliver? Last night, John Oliver released a web exclusive video that watches as a homage to everything that makes the Internet wondrous and confusing. That’s right; John Oliver created a conspiracy video.
However, instead of focusing on more politically charged conspiracies, like whether or not Ted Cruz is the Zodiac Killer or if Hillary Clinton is in fact a robot, Oliver went after a beloved Easter candy: Cadbury Cream Eggs. On a surface level, Oliver’s claim that Cadbury Creme Eggs are related to the Illuminati is completely ridiculous. But after Oliver explains the twisting logic behind his claims, his thesis is…still ridiculous.
This four-minute parody video a silly bit that makes no sense, and I’m sure it was a ton of fun to make. Oliver nails the hyper intensity that characterize most YouTube conspiracy videos, and even starts off his video with a misleading trail of evidence. I can’t help but wonder what dark corners of YouTube were explored in the creation of this one. Though for all of the bit’s insanity, Oliver’s eye-rolling disdain for Internet conspiracists more than comes through. I won’t spoil any more of this Cadbury investigation for you (seriously, it’s worth a watch), but this video serves as a great reminder of how gloriously pointed Oliver’s comedy is.
Typically, Oliver’s desk pieces are either too politically charged or handle such heavy and disturbing subject matter that it’s difficult to appreciate Oliver as a comedian. This is a good thing, since Oliver primarily uses his humor as an avenue to spotlight messed up things in this world. However, that tactic often leaves little room for appreciating Oliver himself. This obsessive, over-the-top, and on-point parody video is really funny, sure, but it also serves as a reminder that the man behind these desk pieces is a comedy missile. And for all his joking, Oliver again delivers some much-needed truth:
The Cadbury Cream Egg is a terrible candy that tastes like mermaid placenta covered in candle wax.
It’s time to wake up, sheeple.
