Humans lost most of our body hair around 70,000-120,000 years ago.
Since we started killing and shearing animals for fur, we didn't really need it any more.
We're now in the unique position among mammalian species, in that we alone have long, course public hair.
There are a couple of theories as to why, including the secretion of pheromones and as a visual indicator of maturity... for... well...

There are also many reasons why you may want to think twice about shaving it off, beyond the attraction of a mate.
And no, we're not just talking about ingrown hairs.
As AsapSCIENCE and Thought Café have shown in aYouTube video, the increase in shaving has reduced pubic lice over the years, but at the same time shaving causes microscopic abrasion which can become infected or can aid in the transmission of sexually transmitted diseases.
It has also been suggested the shaving of pubic hair has helped facilitate the rise of gonorrhea, chlamydia and HPV infections.
In addition, in the US, the most common causes of genital injury in an American emergency room are related to pubic hair removal.
    Food for thought...
