So, if you do you can see the picture of the French Test road fora solar power stripped road. The issue seems to be: "Will the solar panels built into the road withstand cars and trucks driving upon them and still generate electricity every time the sun is out?

We will soon see. If they work I think everything theoretically mostly could be powered by solar powered roads where appropriate. For example, where roads change with temperature from really high to really low below zero this might be a problem. Also, what about traction to prevent accidents on solar powered roads? All these things must be considered to make them practical anywhere.

If they work well enough I think you are going to see them literally anywhere there is enough sun to do this economically. This could be a totally breakthrough moment in human history.

    Big Idea

    The Solar powered road

Can a road power it's own streetlights? That's the question France is trying to answer with it's first Wattaway surface, a 1 kilometer stretch of street paved with 2,880 solar panels. The Ministry of the Environment, which funded the two-year, $5 million experiment, estimates the road will produce roughly 280 megawatt-hours of energy per year, enough to light every street in the small Normandy village. It has plans to expand the setup nationwide. But first the Wattaway, which opened in December, has to prove--among other things--that solar panels can survive the wear and tear of some 2,000 motorists per day.
