National Park Service crews were left scrubbing the Lincoln Memorial Tuesday after it was vandalized with red spray paint overnight.
Officials discovered the red graffiti around 4:30 a.m. on one of the monument’s columns, according to the Washington Post. The paint appeared to say, “f---k law,” but the sloppiness of the scrawl made it challenging to read.
The monument, which overlooks the National Mall and the Capitol building, was closed as preservation crews worked to remove the red lettering.
They’re utilizing a “mild gel-type architectural paint stripper” that should remove the lettering without damaging the stone, National Park Services said in a statement.

A sign on the 1400 block of Constitution Avenue was also the subject of vandalism, though with silver spray paint. Any words were indecipherable, NBC Washington reported.
The Lincoln Memorial was similarly the site of vandalism in 2013, when a woman threw green paint at the iconic monument and then at the Washington National Cathedral. She was arrested, but was ruled incompetent to stand trial.

It took nearly a month for officials to clean up the monuments.
Tuesday’s vandalism comes on the heels of the “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville. Thousands traveled to Virginia for the white supremacist event intended to protest the removal of a Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee.

The rally Saturday quickly escalated into violence — one person was killed and another 19 wounded after a man participating in the event drove his car through a crowd of counter-protesters.
The alleged driver, James Alex Fields Jr. was arrested and charged with second-degree murder.
Seemingly in response, protesters in North Carolina knocked over a Confederate statue in Durham County on Monday.
