The United States has always survived well because of its almost infinite natural resources. However, the world is changing now and because of our ever increasing population, and slowly decreasing opportunities because of the ever increasing population and because of the depletion of Natural gas and oil reserves worldwide, the price of oil and natural gas can only go up as one forecaster says to over 10 dollars a gallon by 2013 and likely stay there or higher for the next 20 years or so.
So, we are in a very serious transition. We are in a sink or swim situation both as a nation and as a world. The country or countries that adapts the fastest to ever increasing oil and natural gas prices will be the country or countries on top of the heap during the next century or so. So, what the U.S. needs to think about is long term planning and sustainability in all of its major planning moves.
Just like President Eisenhower began a nationwide superhighway system that made us the envy of the world, President Obama needs to create an energy policy that is the envy of the world as well. Only in this way can we stay on top so to speak and be respected by the rest of the world the way we once were from the 1940s through the 1970s.
