1 in 5 reported mental illness this last year

1 in 5 Americans Had Mental Illness in 12-Month Period

About 20% of American adults reported having had a mental illness during the preceding year, a government survey found.
The figure rose to almost 30% of those in the 18 to 25 age group, compared with 14.3% of patients 50 and older, according to researchers from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).
And of the nearly 46 million U.S. adults who reported having had a mental, behavioral, or emotional disorder when surveyed in 2010, some 60% didn't receive any treatment for the condition. end quote from above website. end quote.

I personally find this article kind of offensive. Maybe it is because I grew up in the 1950s when almost no one went to psychologists or took mood altering drugs like Prosac and all the others that often make people suicidal.

Of Course people are going to feel crazy if they just finished HIgh School or College and they can't get a job. They were told that they would have a job growing up and now they have nothing. Society failed them! They weren't mentally ill. They were betrayed by society. It isn't mental illness to feel betrayed and let down if you are living in the snow in a tent and living on food stamps. That's not mental illness. That is the betrayal of our system of them having value and being promised a job if they finished college! They aren't crazy. They are just really sad like people have been when they didn't have money or food or shelter all around the world for thousands of years. This isn't crazy. This is harsh reality! It has always been this way! And the U.S. most of the time since about the 1950s has been sort of like Disneyland. Hey Kids! You aren't crazy. You are just now experiencing the suffering of your ancestors! Join the club!
