I'm actually asking a different question here than you might think. I'm asking this question: "Can you survive your life if you don't have a job if you have enough money to live?" This is a much different question than: "Can you survive without a job that gives you money to eat?"
The last article about AI (Artificial Intelligence) beginning to take over jobs of drivers of trucks and cab drivers in the next 10 years brought about this article.
As I was growing up I realized my father was a workaholic. Unless we were hiking on a trail or watching the news or travelogs on TV during the 1950s and 1960s when I grew up my father would always be working on something. It was as if he was afraid just to be and to think and to grow as a person or something. As I watched my father I began to feel sorry for him that he missed so much of what life had to share. I also felt sorry for myself that that my father did not spend that much time with me unless we were traveling somewhere or hunting or something like that.
So, I decided that I was not going to be a workaholic like my father. I decided that there were other ways to be other than that. I decided that I was not going to abandon my children and was going to spend as much time with them as possible when I grew up. And I did.
Of course a good education that my father provided helped me in this. He was forbidden during "The Great Depression" to go to college even though he was a straight A student in high school and incredibly intelligent. But I was given all the opportunities that he was not. So, though he became an electrician and eventually and Electrical Contractor, after he taught me the trade too during my teens summers from age 12 to 17 and then for a year when I was 21, I went my own way and learned to become "An Idea man". There are two kinds of people in the world that I have discovered. One is a plodder who often doesn't mind doing the same thing over and over and over and over in their work every day. The other kind is what an education brought me which was to be a person of ideas. Usually an idea person is not a plodder too. Because the two don't usually go together in most people.
But being an idea person helps one usually be able to cope with not plodding along every day on a job. So, I guess what I'm asking is whether you would be able to cope with not working all the time if that is one of the changes in society between now and 2030 to 2050. Because it seems pretty likely that most jobs are going to be gone and taken over by AI (Artificial Intelligence) and robotics. So, if you are a person that has to be busy all the time it might be hard for you to deal with the coming changes here on earth.
So, maybe learning to be more adaptable might be useful during the present days in which we live which look like they will change rather rapidly into something completely different by 2030 and 2050.
