My Wife's take on North Korea

This is it. The 1 million man army are likely the only people outside of the government that have enough to eat. They have nothing to lose in attacking South Korea because most of their people are starving to death. The worst that could happen (from their point of view) is that North Korea would be taken over by China and the U.S. and Japan and some kind of Marshal plan would be put in place for whoever survives the war. It is impossible for the rest of the world to imagine something this crazy. However, the North Koreans have been living this kind of insanity now since 1950. So, for them in their present state of consciousness with no food, this makes sense to make an attempt to confiscate South Korea and it's resources. Unfortunately, I'm beginning to agree with my wife. What she said makes more sense than anything else I have heard so far.

If you study one of the causes of wars in history it is starvation. From this point of view "It is better for some of us to survive than for none of us to survive" becomes the operative saying.

We may think this is completely crazy. They may not. We may think they are being irrational. They just might be trying to survive (to their way of thinking) and not just starve to death as a nation. Likely they would rather go down fighting with their nukes with all guns blazing in a fitting macho end to the last 60 years or so. I'm beginning to think this might be what we are dealing with and the present young leader isn't in control. The macho leaders behind the scenes these last 60 years might be.

To them this might be a rational choice. To us this might be some kind of limited Nuclear Armageddon on the Korean Peninsula.

Later: Have you ever played Chicken? In the 1950s teenage boys sometimes still played it. It was the ultimate macho experience for some then. Two boys stole two old cars and then they both raced those cars for a cliff. The last one to jump out before the cars went over the cliff won.

The real problem with this game in the 1950s is that sometimes one or both boys died.

I think North Korea is playing this kind of game with the U.S. only North Korea has to win because it is starving. It cannot lose or its government likely will collapse this time. So, losing isn't an option. This is what I think is going on. So, the problem as I see it is that if the U.N. gives North Korea more food to keep it from nuking South Korea or Japan or both or even Guam it will only go to the North Korean soldiers anyway. So, what does the world do? I think the world has to think that North Korea is nuts and might actually use the weapons. So, what is an actual deterrent to North Korea nuking someone? I don't think the solution has been found yet.
