This is a meditation primarily done in Cultures in Asia originally. But since these ideas have now traveled the world and touched everyone now meditation on impermanence is a worldwide phenomenon at this point.
The purpose of meditations on Impermanence is to not waste your life doing things that aren't important to your soul long term.
For example, one of the most horrific experiences I have had so far in life is watching my mother slowly die of Senile dementia and about 15 years before that watch my father slowly die of Cancer. So, it could be said that both these were meditations on impermanence and useful to moving onward as a soul.
Here in the western world of didactic materialism we run from death and towards youth and living. Though this is understandable it is also juvenile as well. Other countries see us as remarkable children running from death often. Though they are envious of our ability to do this they also wonder how long we can "Run from the reality that each of us is eventually going to die".
So, a meditation on impermanence gets you in touch with the fact at a subconscious level that everything dies eventually. So, it behooves you if you believe in a soul and an afterlife to prepare for the infinity of afterlives and (reincarnation) if you believe in that too. For every cause there is a reaction karmicly so being prepared for that is Only Useful. Living one's life as if one will have to answer for everything one does at some point might be useful to all of us. Because that means, "doing unto others only as you would have done to you" makes a whole lot more sense in a world of karma or "As ye sow so shall ye reap" which I believe Jesus said too.
