21% of internet users have had an email or social networking account compromised

begin quote:
21% of internet users have had an email or social networking account compromised or taken over by someone else without permission.
12% have been stalked or harassed online.
11% have had important personal information stolen such as their Social Security Number, credit card, or bank account information.
6% have been the victim of an online scam and lost money.
6% have had their reputation damaged because of something that happened online.
4% have been led into physical danger because of something that happened online.
Gathering data is at the heart of whether e-commerce and media companies can make money online. Some amount of information gathering is necessary to target products and marketing messages to consumers. The period when that can be done readily may be over. The anxiety about access to person data has a stronger and stronger foundation because of how badly online security has eroded.

Americans Try to Disappear from Internet as Security Anxiety Grows

I have said this online for sometime now. Eventually, this will get so bad that most people will stop using the Internet using their own identities. In the meantime what people are doing who are informed enough is to go with a VPN worldwide.

VPN stands for "Virtual Private Network". I would try to explain it but I don't completely understand it myself, so maybe you should read some of the following articles as you find them useful.

This Word Button below is the source of this quote:

I'm not sure how to put a word button in this comment box. But, if you go above to the article where it says:
End quote from: the following word button:
Americans Try to Disappear from Internet as Security Anxiety Grows

is the source of the percentages. I added the numbers based upon percentages of the 2 billion people worldwide that use the Internet. However, it is likely that these figures (percentages) are just for the U.S. It would be assumed that these figures would be much much worse than these if applied to the whole world. So, what I put would be a bare minimum and likely much more than these numbers all over the world.

Sorry I only put the percentages. I applied the numbers to a different article. But, if you use 2 billion internet users and then multiple by for example, .21 you will get what 21percent of 2 billion people actually is.
