Though I understand one of the main reasons these laws have gone into place in states is to lessen the killing by gangs in Mexico and on both sides of the Mexico and U.S. Border, even though many deaths have been lessened in number I still see a problem with these laws.
Though you might reduce horrific deaths in border or south of the border regions it will also result in problems especially with young people who might think that Marijuana is sort of like alcohol which it is not. I personally see alcohol and Marijuana as both being dangerous drugs with completely different effects.
Of the two drugs, alcohol and Marijuana, of course alcohol is much more likely to kill you eventually even though smoking marijuana might have the same effects eventually as smoking cigarettes with nicotine which is also a really big killer.
But, my main problem is what it does to children (under 18 years of age) who don't genetically or psychologically develop right once they start smoking it too young. We might have a whole class of kids who start smoking at 10 or 12 who never psychologically reach maturity ever. And this will be a problem for all society.
Even if you take this and accept that no one is going to smoke it until 18 or 21 (very unrealistic) it still creates problems in decision making. Even if someone smokes marijuana now it will affect all their decisions for the next 6 months in strange ways. It isn't like alcohol where it goes out of the body within 24 hours. NO. Marijuana is going to keep helping you make bad decisions for the next 6 months ongoing. This is just what it does chemically within the body because it doesn't easily leave like alcohol does.
Another problem is that marijuana now is 30 to 300 times stronger in various ways by newer hybridization techniques developed over the years since the 1960s and 1970s. So, some of this stuff is just too strong for most people to handle and stay rational in any way because it is so very hallucinogenic because of it's increased intensity.
So, though you may have reduced deaths in Mexico and the border regions you likely have increased bad decisions in young people 10 to 30 years of age exponentially which will create bad behavior, bad decisions, and bad life choices for 6 months from even trying some new and powerful marijuana by smoking, eating or drinking it in Colorado or some other state.
