Were the quakes in Los Angeles and Chile related. Possibly very obliquely. But, if you notice often quakes in one part of the world happen and seemingly the next day there will be a bigger or smaller earthquake somewhere else. I think it is sort of like when you get into bed at night. If you are married when you get in often your wife might wake up and be sort of grumpy and then turn over or something.
So, likewise when a plate moves one place it affects other connections with plates which then causes other adjustments which causes other adjustments. One way to look at it is that all the plates of the earth are all in bed together here on earth. The earth is their bed. So, when one moves it directly or indirectly might affect other plates as they connect with each other in various ways. So, a quake one place affects the quakes directly or indirectly in other places as well. Also, the gravity pulls of the moon and the planets can have an affect on how the plates move in relation to each other too. However, because there are just so many different variables in place all the time it is really difficult to predict what earthquakes on what faults are going to go off when.
