Avebury, England

Many people are disappointed when they can't walk right up to Stonehenge these days. However, there is always Avebury which we discovered while driving to Glastonbury. In Avebury, England it is sort of a park like place with sheep grazing. And as long as you don't let the sheep out it is perfectly acceptable to walk among the stones which are from about 3 feet high to over 20 feet high and touch them as they were placed likely thousands of years ago by the Druids there. I saw someone climb on one and be chastised by a local as well. So, this place is protected by everyone even though it might seem like a sort of idyllic place in the country.

Also, if you are afraid of sheep you really only need to be afraid of the Rams not the general sheep. However, I didn't see any Rams during the day there. Maybe they only let Rams among the sheep to protect them at night from dogs and predators.

Also, the Red Lion Pub is a nice place to get a bite to eat there way out in the country there. But, you might also experience the Ghosts there too.

But, the most ghosts I ever saw in one place in my life was in Edinburgh because they were digging a subway line and accidentally unearthed hundreds of ghosts from disturbing hundreds of Black plague mass graves from earlier centuries.

But, if you get to Edinburgh don't miss the Edinburgh Castle which is my favorite there in Scotland as it overlooks the ocean in a very military strategic site.

I was in England and Scotland with my wife and 2 daughters (15 and 22 then) in 2011 and my older daughter's boyfriend. We traveled England and Scotland by renting a Mercedes in London and after visiting Avebury and Glastonbury dropped it off in Bristol where we took a train to Edinburgh, Scotland. Then eventually we rented another Mercedes in Scotland and drove north to Aviemore and Loch Ness after first visiting Glasgow and Loch Loman. Then we went to Findhorn and Aberdeen where we visited friends for awhile.

We visited the Red Lion Pub and had a great meal there before traveling on to Glastonbury.
