As Israel's Operation Protective Edge entered its 24th day
on Thursday, the security cabinet has ordered the military to press on
with the offensive in the Gaza Strip, focusing on the destruction of
Hamas' tunnel network.
An
Israeli delegation traveled to Cairo on Wednesday for several hours of
talks over Egypt’s efforts to broker a truce in Gaza. An official said
Israel will continue to allow temporary humanitarian cease-fires in
certain areas.
Three
Israel Defense Forces soldiers were killed and 12 wounded on Wednesday
afternoon in the Khan Yunis area of south Gaza, bringing the death toll
in the military to 56. Three Israeli civilians have been killed in the
current round of fighting.
In
Gaza, the death toll in the Israeli operation has topped 1,360
according to Palestinian health officials. More than 6,500 Palestinians
have been wounded in the Israeli strikes.
Palestinian
President Mahmoud Abbas has declared Gaza a "humanitarian disaster
area" and urged the international community to protect and provide
relief to the battered enclave. In a letter to UN Secretary General Ban
Ki-moon, he accused Israel of committing war crimes.

I'm not sure most of the world really understands what is happening here. First of all, the Gazan Palestinians are not in danger of imminent extinction in the next year or so but the Israeli's are because of present events there in the middle east.
So, what is happening is a public relations campaign by a terrorist organization against Israel. And they might be succeeding at this by using (non-Hamas) civilians as human shields who are doing the dying there. (The civilians can't stand up to Hamas just like civilians in Mexico and Southern U.S. couldn't stand up to the drug cartels a few years ago. This was a primary reason 50,000 people died there and marijuana laws changed in the U.S. to prevent more deaths around the border.
So Hamas is functioning a lot like those Drug Cartels and likely is financed in a lot the same ways as drug cartels are too. So, understanding what is really going on here is Israel trying to not go extinct. The Gaza people dying mostly aren't even Hamas, so the whole thing is pretty horrific with Hamas digging tunnels under Israel and popping up everywhere and killing soldiers and civilians all the time. So, this likely isn't going to end ever until the tunnels and murders of Israelis ends. So, this means this horrific nightmare theoretically could go on for years.
Later: Here is the problem as I see it. Let's say the Israelis get a really big back hoe or something like this and dig a trench 100 feet deep the length of Gaza (or any other border area they want to protect) even then with a 100 foot deep trench about 2 feet wide dug by a machine all Hamas would have to do is to go 200 feet deep past that 100 foot deep trench or they could go 120 feet deep and accomplish the same thing. As long as Israel doesn't have full control of Gaza or any other area or group that could do this it is going to be an ongoing problem to the survival of Israel as a nation.
Also, a two state solution would not be a solution because Hamas still would want to try to extinct Israel. This eventually might become true of ISIL too even though Saudi Arabia is an ally of Israel against Iran. So, this whole thing is kind of crazy in the beginning, in the middle and in the end.
