If through suffering as a human on earth you can move through reactive intentions caused by the karma of your life and get to consciously decided upon intentions and motivations, then you are on your way to enlightenment.
When I was young I thought life was pretty simple: "Boy was I wrong!"
It's not that actually isn't really simple but what often happens is your reactions to what happens to you often take your lives in directions you absolutely would not believe unless you experienced your lives first hand.
So, though life CAN be simple, often you are reacting to all the chaos in your life instead of calming yourself down and getting down to actual intentionality.
Suffering can motivate a person better than anything else.
