This saying from Shakespeare I always like somehow and used to fantasize having it on my tombstone one day. However, if that ever happens I won't be in a grave and the tombstone will only be a marker for my family and friends to remember me.
In the last week my dog kept coming to me and my older daughter and telling me he was done being in a body here on earth. He came to me in a human like form with a dog or wolf head and made it known he was going soon. My wife woke me up this morning and said she had called my younger daughter and she and my wife had agreed he couldn't go on like this not being able to walk and having severe breathing problems. I had taken him for his last walk yesterday before I put my older daughter on the plane. So, when we got back we noticed he couldn't walk anymore and then couldn't breathe last night really either well.
So, we knew it was time when my older daughter, I and my wife and younger daughter couldn't see him suffer anymore. So, we drove him to the vet in the back of my wife's lexus SUV and I opened the back and the lady vet came out and gave him an IV while we petted him and said goodbye. Then I picked him up and carried him inside so they could handle cremation for him so we will get his ashes in a week or two like we did with my daughter's dog about 10 years ago now. The one 10 years ago was a Corgi and Jack Russell mix and she was a real character and fought with a raccoon because one of my daughter's baby sitters forgot to bring her in. But, she was pretty old too and so eventually after she got a kidney infection from getting bit by a raccoon we had to have her put to sleep too.
I'm glad we could all agree on the timing of this along with my dog because this is really difficult in any family for everyone to agree so your dog doesn't have to suffer a long time.
So, "To Sleep perchance to Dream" my old friend.
