There are other people who ARE thinking about buying in a flood plain but they either think, "I'll just buy a boat and tie it to a tree nearby when it floods and be okay. Maybe I'll get a cabin cruiser or something like that and tie it to a tree or to the house when it floods once every 5 or 10 years or so.
If you are wondering why I'm writing this I have been watching the Biblical Floods in Texas and in some of the other states recently and thinking about all of the states (all 50) in regard to floods.
So, today I was thinking about the 150 year floods in California which are far more serious in scope than the potential floods in any other state that I know of.
Periodically, I like to warn people about the 150 year floods (that could occur anytime now) (if normal 150 to 200 year cycles are still in effect here on planet earth). One of the reasons I'm a little nervous about all this right now is that the 1862 floods were preceded by 10 to 20 years of serious droughts. So, we might be embarking upon this type of thing right now which is historical so you can study it if you wish.
So, most people say within 20 miles of the Sacramento river might not realize they are also in a flood plain nor do most people realize that the Sacramento River was once 20 miles wide in 1862 and washed 1/4 of all people, livestock, wood, trees, plants, barns and homes into the Sacramento River all the way into the San Francisco Bay and out into the Pacific Ocean then. The other thing that happened then in 1862 was that Governor Leland Stanford (Stanford University) had to move from Sacramento to San Francisco because Sacramento stayed completely underwater for 6 months after the floods and the whole state went bankrupt and moved from a Cattle state to an agriculture state because otherwise people starved that year because 1/4 of all the cattle had washed into the San Francisco Bay and Pacific Ocean.
For example, these are the images that came up from Yahoo when I put in "California 1862 floods":
