On one level it completely depends upon what the rest of the world does. As long as they are being funded basically from a segment of the 1.1 billion Sunnis around the world who are completely fed up not only with Shia Muslims but every other religion or any other point of view they will be around because they will be funded even if they disperse out of Syria, Iraq, and Yemen at present.
So, mostly it is about funding and second it is about adherents and sympathizers. Likely for every one ISIS fighter or ISIS wife who wants to be there, there are at least 10 sympathizers in all countries of the world wherever there are Sunni Muslims of the extremist kind. So, if the world can figure out how to stop the funding then we can talk about ending ISIS. However, there is really now way to permanently get rid of people who want everyone who isn't Sunni Muslim to go die here on earth. This kind of person is going to be (to a greater or lesser degree) in all countries on earth ongoing).
So, in the end it isn't about getting rid of ISIS it is finding a way to cope with the new reality of people who think like this worldwide.
Because a bridge has been crossed to something new and from my point of view this isn't good at all and in the end may create a religious war between Secular and actual Christians at some point and people who think that all Christians as well as every other religion including Shia muslims should be killed any way they can.
So, it is logical therefore that Christians and Shia Muslims and others being wiped out by Extremist Sunni Muslims in the Middle East at some point will be de facto allies regarding their mutual survival. Even Jewish people likely in the end might be allies with the Shia Muslims even in Iran eventually the way this is all going now. And in addition all Sunni Governments are against terrorist groups and nations like ISIS as well because ISIS wants to end all Shia and Sunni and democratic governments in the Middle East and around the world. This is their goal. So, they have made enemies of the whole world in this.
ISIS might be around a short or a long time. However, the ideas of ISIS in one form or another likely are here to stay. And that is the real problem for mankind, especially mankind in the Middle East and Africa.
At present I foresee millions of deaths in the Middle East and Africa from ISIS. And that might not be something anyone can stop very easily at present.
And the real problem right now is the world is worried a war between NATO and Russia which is the main reason we don't see more funding going into ending ISIS right now. However, what we do see is Western Powers destroying every tank, armored vehicle, or plane belonging to ISIS. So, if ISIS attacks it attacks more and more by motorcycle carrying two or more soldiers carrying AK-47s or shoulder fired rocket launchers. OFten this configuration doesn't warrant a 1 million dollar missile because it isn't cost effective.
So, the concentration now is killing all tanks and armored vehicles and heavy artillery and arms depots first that presently belong to ISIS that they likely mostly stole from someone else.
So, how long will ISIS be around?
That's up to the world really and how important it is to the whole world that ISIS ceases to exist.
