The problem is as I see it is to increase exponentially over this century for a variety of reasons. 10 to 20 years from now this figure is likely to be (with this figure included) 100 million people. And because water and tillable land are running out around the world this can only increase and likely you will see populations start to decrease worldwide at some point as aquifers dry up one by one across the world because we presently are using up aquifers much faster than they ever could be replenished. So, by the end of this century up to half of the aquifers will be dry or close to it worldwide.

What is happening on earth is completely unsustainable. However, it might surprise you to learn what actually is sustainable.

The way things are if you want to have a world that is sustainable for thousands of years you could not really have more than a billion people on it. (much like the Earth before 1900).

Or if we go high tech we might house 13 billion or more if we all lived underground and used all lands as farmlands that were good for that. But, everyone would have to live underground to manage this.

So, if you want to talk sustainability 1 billion people could be maintained for thousands of years(like humans did before modern medicine and vaccines). Or you could sustain 13 to 14 billion people if we tore down all the cities that are built on good farmland and all lived underground. This is the actual choice people of earth have to make 1 billion or living underground.

Unfortunately, most people don't understand or won't make the decision so I guess we are headed for Mad Max or something like that instead.

This seems to be the choice that is not being made by enough people to make a real difference.

And I see the problem as beyond that. I see the problem as people get more frustrated they are more likely to use nuclear weapons on earth  and if that happens likely the planet itself will eventually look like the asteroid belt which was also once a planet humanoids lived on before 65 million years ago.

Likely a piece of it hit here in the Gulf of Mexico 65 million years ago and killed all the larger dinosaurs and most plant species except maybe ferns and stuff like that.
