A large wildfire in Southern California overtook a major freeway, burning multiple vehicles.
The cars were stopped on Interstate 15 in the Cajon Pass north of Los Angeles around 3 p.m. when the North Fire jumped the roadway. Video footage from KTLA-TV showed at least six vehicles actively burning as helicopters dropped water from above. The fire continued spreading over the course of the afternoon, eventually engulfing a semi truck, a boat on a trailer, and other vehicles.
It wasn’t immediately clear if anyone was injured or killed in the fire, though San Bernardino County Fire described the scene as a “mass casualty incident.”
Uriah Hernandez, a spokesman for the U.S. Forest Service, told BuzzFeed News officials did not have word on any injuries or casualties. He also did not know what brought the cars to a halt so near the fire.“Somebody hits the breaks and everybody stops,” he added.
