I guess what it was like in the 1950s and 1960s is interesting. That's the word I guess would be most helpful. It was like other places I went to outside California were sort of caught in a time warp compared to California sort of like they still were in the previous century (the 1800s) or they still lived in the 1920s, 1930s or 1940s. They hadn't yet made it fully into the 1950s and 1960s yet. But, California mostly had through Disneyland and surfing at the beach and Hollywood and hiking and mountain climbing and the out of doors. People still liked to ride horses in California (I know I did) because after all we were a western state. So, in the Rose parade in Pasadena (then and now) there were always a lot of horses.
You can also look back at early Rose Parades where Horses sometimes even pulled Floats I believe back then.
So, progressive, maybe more progressive than anywhere else on earth in some ways was coastal California. You could still find people who still lived in the 1800s if you wanted to in the remote parts of California. But, now you would find them very strange because they are so very different to now.
So, I guess the 1800s were still alive in California in the 1950s because people were still alive (like Grandparents or great grandparents that settled the western United States as children or young adults.
So, this made it a much more conservative and different place than now. Tradition has been sucked out of California more now because of all their deaths. But, I guess this is true of everywhere as people are born and die over time. Everything keeps changing.
