If you notice the red race car below (part of likely the left front wheel and spring and tie rod, the tie rod is the bottom horizontal piece of metal going across. My concept of a damper gear was always the shock absorber (horizontal) usually put around the middle of the front of the vehicle to prevent wobble in the tie rod, especially at certain speeds if there are bumps in the roads.
Part of car front suspension and steering mechanism: tie rod, steering arm, king pin axis (using ball joints).
