A realized Lama is literally a "Living Buddha" which is different from the average human being.
So, when a "Living Buddha" passes on who is recognized by Tibetan Buddhists in being this, often he stays in a meditative pose, (His choice of meditative pose) for 1 year or more sending back the heaven realms after he reaches there through his aura and body.
Sometime within 2 years time I believe he is covered with wax to look exactly like he did as a Lama when alive and placed into a Gompa (Tibetan Temple) to bless all in the area and all who come into the temple.
I saw one or more of these in Tibetan Temples as I and my family traveled but did not really realize what I was seeing until I read about this in one of the books I read on Tibetan Buddhism a year or two later after I had returned to California on the northern Coast.
So, when you visit Tibetan Monasteries you might see one of these in India or Nepal or Bhutan or wherever you visit one on earth. It is quite a blessing.
What is remarkable about these beings is that their bodies do not decompose as is true even of Catholic Saints too. This is one of the signs of a Saint in any culture- their bodies do not decompose as normal human beings do.
