The first reason is:
1.The Republican establishment could not be honest with Republican rank and file voters and keep the Republican party intact the last 20 years. So, again and again Republicans are making promises that there is no way to keep. So now, even a Con man businessman like Trump sounds more honest to them than what they have received which is nothing that was promised to them. It was never even possible to get for their constituents what they promised either. This is the first reason.
2. Since 1988 there have not been enough White Republicans left alive to ever elect another Reagan or Bush. In fact, the last Bush elected by the popular vote was actually Bush I in 1988 because Bush II was never elected in by the popular vote because Gore actually won the popular vote and the Supreme Court decided to put in Bush II and then with 9-11 and 2 wars going on of course he was re-elected. Americans don't change presidents in the middle of wars unless the die in office like FDR did during World War II.
3. There are also now many factions that really hate each other all within the Republican Party. The newest of these is the Tea Party which tends to be the least realistic (at least up until now of all the factions). The second faction I would call the BASE of the Republican Party which is the Conservatives (they don't want ANYTHING to change away from the 1950s). The third faction is the Moderates who are much more reasonable and like Democrats in some ways who both the Conservatives and the Tea Party Republicans both hate because they are too much like Democrats.
But, the biggest hatred I have seen so far is between the Conservatives and the Tea partiers. These two groups are ready to literally kill each other and they are the real fireworks within the Republican Party.
Now you have a whole new wing of the Republican Party that I would call the Populists.
They are the followers of Trump who is also speaking at least Populist Rhetoric similar in some ways to Ralph Nader a few years ago. However, Trump is also spewing racist rhetoric against Mexicans and wants to build a wall to keep them out.
However, that is ridiculous because they will just build tunnels, or fly over or whatever they need to do. (The Great wall of China didn't keep out the Huns either).
The moderates likely can live with the Conservatives. However, the Conservatives and the tea Partiers are so volatile they might literally kill each other this election season. So, because of this I don't think the Tea Party the Populists and the Conservatives can all live together at peace within the same party. I don't think it's possible anymore.
So, one or all of these theoretically might become a separate party at any time before or after or during the election cycle.
There are likely many more reasons than this that the Republican Party is exploding but these are the ones that most come to mind today.
