Some call it "The Fear of God". Others call it "The Terror of God"
For me, likely I would simply say, "There are no atheists in foxholes".
It's basically when you have no real hope of surviving the situation you are in often you turn to God. And if that works for you, you remember God then next time you have a near death experience and then it becomes a habit that you accept.
My thought is that most people who don't believe in God have not been terrified out of their minds as children for weeks or months or years to the point where not believing on God isn't an option to stay sane or alive.
So, children with no serious health problems over 12 who are financially well cared for often can afford to not believe in God or a higher power (UNTIL) something really serious happens in their lives. Then they might go on anti-depressants or kill themselves because they never had to face something this serious before.
However, people with a faith in God might not need Anti-depressants ever because their belief in God would create chemicals in their brains where they wouldn't ever need anti-depressants or sedatives or sleeping pills in their lives or alcohol ever at all. This is just real life for many people all over the World. This is likely true for at least 2 to 3 billion people on earth.
