Decked out in a dark suit and a red "Make America Great Again" hat, Christopher Conway, 51, was heading to the Trump appearance inside a Burlingame hotel when he was surrounded by nearly a dozen demonstrators.
"F--- Trump," the crowd shouted.
Conway was punched in the back of the head and forced into a metal barrier as a female protester hurled repeated insults.
QUIZ: WHO SAID IT? TRUMP, HITLER, MUSSOLINI, STALIN?
A pair of officers intervened, giving Conway space to clamber over the barrier and hop a bush to safety.
"I was punched and kicked but I'm good," Conway, a mortgage broker, later told a Los Angeles Times reporter. "I walked through and these guys felt free to hit me in my hometown of Burlingame. I don't stand for that."
Trump was in Burlingame to address the California Republican Party convention.
The crowd of protesters swelled to several hundred by the time Trump’s motorcade approached the Hyatt Regency San Francisco Airport about noon.
CHARLES KRAUTHAMMER: THE WORLD ACCORDING TO DONALD TRUMP
Amid reports that the demonstrators were trying to storm the hotel, the motorcade abruptly pulled off the side of the highway.
Trump emerged from his vehicle, surrounded by bodyguards, hopped from the raised roadway onto a patch of grass and slipped into the hotel through a back entrance.
Trump left the event the same way he came.
Earlier, a group of protesters carrying a "Dump Dumb Trump" banner briefly stopped traffic on Bayshore Highway.
Protesters also managed to cause a ruckus inside the convention, unfurling a giant banner that read "Stop Hate" and included an image of a GOP elephant brandishing a gun.
Roughly 20 people were arrested and one Trump supporter was left bloodied after unrest broke out outside the amphitheater at the OC Fair & Event Center.
The seething crowd was dispersed about 11 p.m. after cops on horseback arrived on the scene.
