I actually understand this in the context of growing up in the 1950s. Trump is a year older than I am so I understand that the average person thought like this then. It was: "Survival 101".
Because people could secretly or not so secretly hit you or hurt you (this happened to everyone by the way then. There really wasn't anyone that didn't get emotionally hurt or physically hurt then in public school at the very least. Everyone graduated public school with a whole lot of physical and emotional and psychological scars if they even survived to graduation in the first place.
So, the idea, "I always get revenge is straight out of the 1950s and before you if grew up back then. The reason for this is if someone hit you you had to discourage them from doing this again by hurting them more than they did you. Otherwise, they were just going to keep hurting you until you felt you had to kill them to survive it. So, you had to find a way to stop it and nip it in the bud even if you got a 2 by 4 stud and hit someone over the head with it (my uncle actually did this to make someone stop beating them up in the 1920s in Texas.) He knocked the person out completely but at least they never beat him up ever again after that experience.
So, "I always get even" is right out of the 1950s and before and how everyone thought who survived in the real world of "where the rubber meets the road" then.
However, now everyone is PC and just lies about everything which makes people so crazy eventually they just pick up a gun and shoot someone. So, in some ways the 1950s was more real and less fake than now and many many less people got shot then because people were more real and less fake. Fake just makes some people crazy and then they pick up a gun because there is no reality at all (which is the problem of Political correctness in the first place).
For example, Putin is like Trump (right out of the 1950s) He ALWAYS takes revenge.
