Human remains examined at a Cairo morgue indicate that an explosion caused EgyptAir Flight 804 to plunge into the Mediterranean Sea, according to Egyptian forensic officials.
Investigators found 80 small pieces of human remains found floating at the crash site, suggesting that a blast tore through the doomed flight transporting 66 passengers from Paris to Cairo early Thursday.
“There isn’t even a whole body part, like an arm of a head,” said a forensics official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
He sorted through the remains at the morgue, where relatives of the victims gave DNA samples to identify the victims.

He believes “the logical explanation is that it was an explosion” that took down the Airbus A320 as it entered Egyptian airspace. None of the remains found were larger than a hand.
Egyptian authorities have suggested that terrorists are more likely to have caused the crash than an equipment malfunction.
Greek officials have speculated that a bomb blast or cockpit struggle caused the plane’s bizarre twists and turns before it vanished from radar and plummeted into the Mediterranean.
