Father of slain Muslim American war hero gives emotional DNC speech blasting Trump’s immigration policies
Capt. Humayun Khan was killed in Iraq by suicide bombers after he waved his soldiers back, likely saving their lives, earning the Bronze Star and Purple Heart posthumously.
His father took the stage to make sure he was not forgotten — and offer a shining example for why Trump is wrong for demonizing Muslims.
Cuomo uses dad’s famous 1984 convention speech to attack Trump
“Have you ever been to Arlington cemetery? Go look at the graces of brave patriots who died defending the United State of America. You will see all faiths, genders and ethnicities. You have sacrificed nothing,” he continued.
“This is a historic election and I request to honor the sacrifice of my son and on Election Day take the time to get out and vote for the healer, vote for the strongest, most qualified candidate, Hillary Clinton, not the divider,” he concluded.
Donald Trump threatens to ‘hit’ several of the DNC speakers
Clinton is hoping for the same kind of convention bump that has pushed Donald Trump into a tie in the polls with her in spite of the Republican National Convention’s repeated missteps, and Thursday’s speech provides her with her largest national audience she’ll have until the presidential debates this fall.
Former Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm (D) went hard after Trump’s ego.
“Imagine Donald Trump’s version of the Constitution: ‘I the person, in order to form a more perfect union. Or centuries later: ‘I shall overcome.’ Or… ‘Ask not what I can do for my country. Ask what my country can do for me,’” she said as the crowd laughed.
Sarah McBride becomes first transgender convention speaker
“Donald, you’re so vain, you probably think this speech is about you,” she finished.
“Donald Trump’s hat may be stamped with ‘make America great again’ but his ties are stamped ‘made in China,’” Brown declared. “Donald Trump says he wants to run our country like one of his businesses,” he said. “I guess that means he wants to slap his name on it, make false promises, and then scam innocent people out of their savings.”
The “Bernie or bust” crowd has been gradually quieting down over the span of the week after some raucous booing protests on Monday. But hundreds wore day-glow lime shirts with the slogan “enough is enough” on Thursday, standing out in the crowd. And while their plan was for a silent protest, many couldn’t resist chanting “No more war” when retired Gen. John Allen took the stage, triggering “USA, USA” responses from a crowd suddenly littered with American flags.
Clinton wasn’t the only one making history on Thursday.
“My name is Sarah McBride and I am a proud transgender American,” said the first trans person ever to take the stage at a major-party convention, getting a huge standing ovation from the hall.
"Will we be a nation where there's only one way to love, only one way to look and only one way to live? Or will we be a nation where everyone has the freedom to live openly and equally?” she asked.
