On 24 July 2016, twelve people were injured, three seriously, in a suicide bombing outside a wine bar in Ansbach, Germany.[3] The bomber, the only known fatality, was a 27-year-old Syrian man who had been denied asylum.[4]
The incident followed three other attacks in Germany within a week, including a machete attack that killed a pregnant woman in Reutlingen earlier in the day,[5] a shooting that killed nine people in Munich several days earlier, and a train attack in Würzburg.[6]

Event

At 22:12 CEST (20:52 UTC), a bomb exploded outside Eugene's Wine Bar (German: Eugens Weinstube) in Ansbach, Germany.[1][7] The explosion occurred near the entrance to the Ansbach Open music festival with around 2,500 people in attendance.[8][9] It was initially thought to have been caused by a gas leak.[10] The suicide bomber, known to police after trying to commit suicide twice prior to the bombing, carried a backpack filled with screws, nails, and miscellaneous metal parts used in wood manufacturing and was denied entry into the music festival due to the lack of a ticket shortly before the blast.[2][11][12][13] Emergency personnel approached the bomber after the blast in an attempt to resuscitate, but the bomber was already dead.[2][12]
As a result of the bombing, the music festival was cancelled and the immediate vicinity in which the bombing occurred was evacuated.[2] Joachim Herrmann, the Bavarian interior minister, said that German authorities would investigate ways to prevent abuse of the asylum system.[2]
