Accident
Train number 1614 on the Pascack Valley Line left the station at Spring Valley, New York, bound for Hoboken, and crashed into the Hoboken terminal around 8:45 AM EDT.[4] The train went "'over the bumper block, through the depot' and came to rest at the wall right before the station's waiting area."[4] The first car sustained major structural damage.[4]One witness reported that the train "never slowed down" as it went to the station, the end of the line.[5]
Casualties
The disaster caused at least one death; about one hundred other people were injured.[4] The injured were taken to the Jersey City Medical Center and Hoboken University Medical Center, and at least one was sent to Christ Hospital.[4]Impact
Eyewitness reports indicate that portions of the station roof have collapsed, as has part of the roof of the train shed, and that water is spraying from the site of the accident.[5] Major structural damage to the station was reported.[3]Following the disaster, rail service to and from the Hoboken station (including PATH service) was suspended, and local buses and ferries accepted NJ Transit train tickets.[4]
Investigation
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating the accident. An NTSB "go team" was sent to the scene.[6] The Federal Railroad Administration also dispatched investigators.[4]References
