LOS ANGELES, Oct 27 — HBO host John Oliver shut down Donald Trump’s understanding of women’s rights while also vowing to stay in the country even if Trump wins the election during a gala on Tuesday night.
Oliver spoke at the gala for the Centre for Reproductive Rights at New York’s Lincoln Centre to honour filmmaker Dawn Porter and author Isabel Allende.
“Good evening gentlemen and nasty women,” the Last Week Tonight host greeted the room, citing Trump’s debate remark to Hillary Clinton, to cheers from the crowd.
Oliver joked about the idea that anti-Trump voters will “move to Canada” if Trump gets elected.
“I am not going to Canada,” Oliver promised.
“Armageddon is not enough to force me up there. I’m staying. I’m staying in this country like the string quartet stayed on the Titanic.”
On the topic of Trump, Oliver responded to the candidate’s comments during the latest debate in which he said that “in the ninth month, you can take the baby and rip the baby out of the womb of the mother just prior to the birth of the baby”.
“In terms of the communication about reproductive rights and the conversation that is so important,” the rhetoric in the third presidential debate was dangerous, according to Oliver.
“His discussion of late-term abortions showed no real understanding of how abortions work, no clear understanding of the basic biology of women’s bodies and a very poor sense of grammar as well, so I guess we got in a sense what we were asking for,” Oliver said.
“If you ask Donald Trump to draw a fallopian tube, I cannot imagine what you would get back other than a child’s drawing of a cobra.”
Oliver also paid tribute to Porter, who Oliver called one of his “favourite filmmakers in the world” and said her film Trapped was “an absolute spectacular document of the challenges the reproductive health faces”.
