Hart Lake above Castle lake in the Mount Shasta area

 

Hart lake is tiny less than a block long or even less. It is nestled in why people call Castle Lake Castle lake. It is nested in the part that looks like a Castle above it to the left. You can hike there if you know the way but you sort of need a local to show you because otherwise you will wind up at Little Castle lake likely on the Pacific Crest Trail to Castle Crags.

These picture are from google images and the 2nd and third one is pictures taken of Mt. Shasta from the back side of tiny Hart lake nestled in the Castle craggy part in back of Castle lake when you arrive there. The first and 4th images are of Castle lake at 6000 feet so hart lake likely is at 7000 feet approximately and unreachable if it snows very much that year Unless you are on snow shoes or cross country skis with skins. or split apart snow boards with skins between about December and March or May or June depending upon the snow that year and how cold it stays and whether Castle lake and hart freeze that year.

Today my friends and I hiked up to hart lake from Castle lake. We got a pair of walking poles because there are a lot of rocks you have to walk over doing this and at 65 and 69 the two eldest of us both used walking poles similar to ski poles which help coming down through big rocks at our age. In other words it is not a simple trail all the way so you have to be careful but there are no class 3 or class 4 or 5 routes either. Just be aware what time of year it is and when the sun sets and is there a moon or do you have a flashlight with good batteries? (especially if you leave about 2 o 3 o'clock and pm and are older like we are. We made it back before we needed flashlights even then.

Beautiful day IN town (not at 6000 or 7000 feet) the tempertures were 67 today with a low of 43 degrees in Shasta but it's supposed to be 74 in town tomorrow and 79 in town Mount Shasta on Tuesday so beautiful fall weather up here right now and the trees are at their peak right about now too in fall colors. Beautiful!
