Teen girl critically wounded in Maryland school shooting will be taken off life support
A 16-year-old girl who was critically wounded by a classmate during a Maryland school shooting on Tuesday is being taken off life support, her mother said.
Jaelynn Willey, who was left brain dead with “no life left in her,” will be removed from life support Thursday evening, her mother Melissa Willey told reporters.
The teen recently ended a relationship with 17-year-old Austin Rollins, who opened fire at Great Mills High School in St. Mary’s County on Tuesday, authorities confirmed.
“All indications suggest the shooting was not a random act of violence,” St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release.
Armed with his father’s legally-owned handgun, Rollins fired shots and struck his ex-girlfriend just minutes before classes were scheduled to begin, according to police.

Jaelynn was “gravely” injured in the shooting and taken to University of Maryland Prince George’s Hospital Center in critical condition.
“The snow fell wet and thick in Southern Maryland, closing the schools down which seemed only fitting,” reads the latest update on Willey’s YouCaring page.
“I wish that she been home today to sled with her little siblings. Instead it’s been 36 hours of being in critical condition after she was shot at her high school, a place that should be safe.”
Student Desmond Barnes — “who was in the same hallway” as Willey when the chaos unfolded — was also injured in the shooting. The 14-year-old was treated for a gunshot wound to his thigh and released from MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital Wednesday morning.

Rollins died at a hospital following a brief confrontation with the school’s lone resource officer, Deputy First Class Blaine Gaskill.
Gaskill fired off a single shot at the student, who “simultaneously” discharged his Glock semi-automatic. The school resource officer was uninjured.
Detectives are still in the process of interviewing friends, family and associates of Rollins to better understand the motive behind the violent attack.
