Winter Storm Quinn Bringing Much Needed Snow for California

The snow pack in the Sierra is well below average. But snow from Winter Storm Quinn should help that out. That is good news for California, who get a lot of their water from the melting snow.

At a Glance

  • Heavy rain triggered a debris flow Friday morning near the town of Ojai in Southern California.
  • Evacuations were ordered for residents near three burn scars in Santa Barbara County, California, on Thursday afternoon.
  • The evacuation order includes Montecito, where 21 people were killed by a mudslide in January.
A round of storms swept into Southern California Thursday night and Friday morning, triggering at least one burn-scar mudslide after thousands were evacuated from vulnerable areas.
The California Highway Patrol announced Friday morning that State Route 33 was closed above Ojai because of a debris flow. It wasn't immediately known if the mudslide caused any damage to homes, or if there were any injuries.
The area was left charred in December because of the Thomas fire, which burned 440 square miles, destroyed more than 100 structures and killed two people.
Officials issued mandatory evacuations for the Thomas, Whittier and Sherpa burn areas in Santa Barbara County, which took effect at noon PST Thursday, according to KEYT.com.
Sheriff Bill Brown told the Associated Press that the evacuation order impacts as many as 30,000 people.

The order includes Montecito, where 21 people were killed by a huge landslide in January, the report added.
"If at any time people feel threatened, take immediate action. Do not wait for a notification. Those with access and functional needs and those with large animals should leave," said the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office.
A Red Cross shelter was opened at Earl Warren Showgrounds in Santa Barbara to take in evacuees, KEYT also reported.
