basically you don't want to buy land in a California Floodplain

If you read the USGS report on what likely will happen at sometime in the future a lake 30 miles wide and 300 miles long is likely from about Redding or Red Bluff through Sacramento and into Stockton at some point in the future. the lake would be anywhere from 3 feet deep to 15 feet deep.

Los Angeles or Long Beach is approximately 26 miles over the ocean to Catalina island. A body of water 30 miles by 300 miles is much bigger than that distance from Long Beach to Catalina Island in the ocean.

When this happened in 1862 water was in Sacramento over 3 feet deep or greater for 6 months time and they had to move the capital to San Francisco for about a year or more.
