"trees with spiral bark blown off from lightning" and here is what I found. My experience was running to a tree hit by lightning years ago with a 5 gallon bucket of water a few blocks down a hill from my vehicle trying to put the fire out before it spread. Not too long after luckily the forest service fire trucks arrived and spelled me working to put this out before it spread near Castle Lake above Lake Siskiyou near the little City of Mt. Shasta.
By the way you do not want to be near a tree as it is being struck with lightning because even if you aren't hit by lightning likely you will be hit by pieces of bark and wood as it explodes off the tree and those could go right through you like glass or knives only in wood splinter and bark forms.
One of the ways to understand a lightning strike is coming is your hair will stick straight up into the air just before it strikes. If you are near a tree I would either run until your hair doesn't stick straight up or lay down face first on the ground so you are less likely to be struck by lightning or debris as soon as possible.
