166 FIRE: FRONT FIRE BURNING NEAR LOS PADRES NATIONAL PARK IN CALIFORNIA
A new fire sparked in Southern California on Sunday, August 19, fire officials confirmed. The Front Fire, burning near the Rockfront area of Los Padres National Park, has consumed 1,000 acres, according to the National Wildfire Coordinating Group.
The fire began at around 1:30 p.m. local time on Sunday, off Highway 166 and Sierra Madre Road in northern Santa Barbara County. Some 700 fire personnel were deployed to the scene.
The cause of the fire remained under investigation. The Front Fire was about 5 percent contained on Monday, while full containment was expected by August 26, according to KSBY-TV.
No structures appeared to be threatened by the fire, and no mandatory evacuation orders were in place as a result of the Front Fire, KSBY reported.
Multiple other fires continued burning in California this week. Smoke from the flames in California has reached parts of the eastern United States, including Ohio.
The Ranch Fire, part of the Mendocino Complex Fires, consumed more than 335,000 acres and was 76 percent contained. Near Redding, the Carr Fire consumed 227,000 acres and was 83 percent contained. It had already consumed some 1,000 homes. Thanks to determined firefighting efforts, the Ferguson Fire that threatened Yosemite National Park was fully contained this week. Two firefighters were killed and 19 more were injured battling the blaze that began in mid-July.
“The weather is helping the fires to lay down, and [firefighters] are able to get better containment lines around them,” said CalFire spokeswoman Lynnette Round, according to BBC News.
Farther north, British Columbia, Canada, was experiencing its own rash of wildfires. More than 500 fires were burning in the western part of the country, prompting evacuation orders and air quality alerts. A state of emergency was issued for the area in order to allocate resources to firefighting efforts.
