I bought the blue and black version of this model in 2009 when I had watched "Long Way Round" that was made in 2004. I thought about buying the same type of bike then as they rode which were BMW's but also found out that parts are usually easier to come by for the KLR 650 if you ride it around the world. But, I never did the round the world ride they did but had a great time with the bike. However, in 2015 when I had a burst appendix and operation and resulting hernia near my naval this dream wasn't going to happen. So, now I'm thinking about getting a Yamaha yz250F or a Yamaha yz450F and trading my present bike in on that instead. The only problem is I need something light enough that isn't a problem that I can at least pick up the front end to put into the back of a pickup truck or into a trailer(Uhaul also has motorcyle trailers to rent because I rented one a couple of years ago. The 650 is a little heavy for off road, especially if you want to jump your bike at all. But, for around the world riding on literally any type of terrain it would be good for that just like similar BMW bikes. And since they are dualsports they are easily licensed because they are street legal when you buy them. But, like I said for more radical off road things you need something about 500 CC or less down to about 250 CC if you are a full grown adult. But, remember a 250 isn't usually fast enough on a freeway to get out of danger. You need something like a 650 if you are going to ride freeways very much just to get out of the way of people who don't see you because they aren't expecting a motorcycle to be there, especially older drivers who might not be perfectly functioning drivers in the first place. You need something that can do 75 or 85 in an emergency and get there quick to survive freeway driving better. Though I rode my 1974 Honda 250XL from 1975 to around 1980 on freeways I preferred not to just because of people who couldn't see me.
