Open ended Airline tickets

I used these in 1985 to go to India, Nepal, Thailand, and Japan with my family. Originally, I priced this with regular tickets then and the least it was was 10,000 dollars then for me and my family to do this which was too much for us to spend then and have money for up to 6 months on the ground as well. However, I discovered in San Francisco a place then called Global Travel II in the Haight Ashbury section which had open ended tickets that were mostly for college researchers like Anthropologists who go to digs around the world to discover more stuff and do research on various cultural and art objects etc. like that. So, when I asked them if they sold open ended tickets the man said, Yes. but you would have to leave and get as far as Thailand by the 11th of December or else it won't work because of the holidays and Chinese New Years and all that in Asia. So, this is what we did so he booked the first tickets open ended on December 11th 1985 to Narito, Japan. After Narito Airport we hopped on another plane to Bangkok where a it was I think then 40 bahts to the dollar which meant that staying in a guest house and eating was only for us about 10 dollars a day then with food and lodging in a safe place all paid for because of the rate of exchange between dollars and the baht then in Thailand.

So, instead of paying 10,000 dollars round trip for the whole family (myself, wife and 3 kids 10 to14) we only paid I think 6000 dollars for 6 open ended round trip tickets to Narito, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Thailand and Katmandu, Nepal. So, first we went to Bangkok and stayed at a place called Sweetie's Guest house in Bangkok and then went north by bus to Koi Samed island where we snorkled and ate shrimp and coconuts for a week and rented a small hut for 4 dollars a day up on risers away from the beach. We hired a college student to bargain and to travel with us for that week which was a very good investment in all the money we saved in negotiating for food, lodging and transportation that whole week to and from Koe Samed Island from Bangkok. So, by only paying 6000 dollars for open ended 6 month tickets to Narito in Japan, Hong Kong (we never went to Hong Kong because 4 of the 5 of us had giardia coming home so we were not well enough to go to Hong Kong at that point. But, we did go to Japan, Thailand, and Nepal by plane and by bus and car and train to India as well. So, we spent 2 weeks in Thailand and then basically 2 months in Nepal in the himalayas and 2 months in India starting with Bodhgaya, Varanasi, Taj mahal which is in Agra, then New Delhi then Dharamshala, in Himachal pradesh state at about 6000 feet into the Himalayas.
