I"m presently thinking that science was an attempt (especially for the last 500 years or so) to unify human concepts in order to prevent World Wars. And this to some degree was successful because we haven't nuked the planet out of existence yet. However, it is quite likely that retroactive time travel has been used to prevent nuclear bombings and wars a lot since World War II. I'm not sure why Hiroshima and Nagasaki were left on the time line, except maybe as a reminder of how horrific nuclear war actually is for the whole planet. So, in this sense historically Japan in Hiroshima and Nagasaki became the world "Sacrificial Lamb".
