Flew from Portland to San Jose today

Why San Jose?

Because there is often less traffic to deal with on freeways etc. if you fly into San Jose. The Only reason you might have to fly into San Francisco is for some overseas flights where maybe you have to fly into either Los Angeles, San Francisco or Seattle to land on the west coast and then maybe you would transfer to a domestic flight.

I talked to a lady doctor today who was raised in France and the U.S. She was pretty interesting to talk to. The flight seemed very quick but I was very surprised to go from cloudy and about 60 degrees to 85 in San Jose and even higher like 88 surrounding cities. Very sunny day today in Northern California with a truly amazing pinkish reddish sunset tonight as well.

I made the mistake (because I was too tired really to do this of when I got back my now 20 pound German Shepard Puppy (he was only 13 pounds when I left for Portland a week ago I took for a walk in the forest. However, I had walked up this very green hill covered with wildflower (yes, very strange to still have this on June 8th by the way. But, we had record breaking rain for may all over California, just like many places in the U.S. like Texas and Oklahoma and Arkansas and other states had with rain and flooding. Only here in California there wasn't really the flooding just very tall grasses everywhere and still a lot of wildflowers even on June 8th today.

Well. After I was really good with the puppy and he was having an out of body experience of ecstasy in the green hills and I got winded. I finally headed back down the hill and my mistake was calling my son on the phone and not really thinking about the puppy. Well. I noticed he had wandered into a bush and got very upset because he had gone into a poison oak bush. To make matters worse my wife and gone shopping and wasn't there to back me up. So, I knew this was going to be hard to remove the poison oak from the puppy and not get poison oak myself. Dogs don't usually ever get poison oak because of their fur. But, us naked apes (human beings) get it because our skin is unprotected by fur and this can be dangerous. So, I tried to figure out how to get the puppy home without giving myself a case of poison oak  (it comes from the oil on the leaves). There are two places you never want to get poison oak by the way: one is on your genitals and the other is in your eyes. Both are really really awful to deal with. And some people are very allergic to poison oak too and then they have to go to the hospital and get cortisone shots which can make people very emotional and things like that.

I don't need the shots because I'm not very allergic. But, it isn't very pleasant. But, if you are exposed to poison oak you need a product called Technu:

Here it is:

But be sure you keep this stuff out of your eyes because it will cause your eyes to really dry out in a bad way, even getting the suds in your eyes. So, be very careful. It breaks the oils down and helps remove them from your skin but it also really dries your skin out so be careful of that too.

But, it might keep you out of the hospital with a really bad case of poison oak too. So, this is why I use it here and so does my family.

Most of the time you are not going to run through poison oak bushes (if you live almost anywhere in California) because if you haven't had it yourself you have heard many horror stories of people who were exposed to poison oak one way or another.

But, often people are exposed through their pets or the pets of others. So, if you are around where it grows be careful petting any animals including your own if you aren't sure they are not exposed to poison oak.

I used baby wipes if I see a dog of mine go into poison oak. However, a puppy is all over the place and not disciplined like an adult dog might be, so today was a very difficult experience.

Note: When you use baby wipes I usually used it on my adult dogs if I saw them run through poison oak when I got home. This way my wife or children wouldn't be exposed by petting them. But, even then some times of the year the poison oak oil is very potent and so those times likely you might get a little patch of itchy skin and swelling. It's really important not to scratch that itch because that just spreads the little micro explosions on your skin to other places. But, baby wipes is a good start to prevent people around you from getting poison oak from your pets.

I brought the puppy into the shower and put technu on his coat being careful to avoid his eyes or head but rinsing all parts of him thoroughly. However, because my wife wasn't there I had to leave a leash on him and pick him up and walk outside on the deck so he could shake the water off his coat and then take a towel and towel him down as best I could. I decided not to use a blow drier because dogs have excellent hearing and I didn't want to mess up his hearing with a blow drier because he might need that great hearing in the future, especially because he is a German Shepard and they tend to be guard dogs naturally or with training.
