FIGURE 1. Goals of community mitigation for pandemic influenza

The peak with no mitigation would be 1,500,000 to 2,200,000 deaths here in U.S.

The lower peak (cross hatches) is what we are trying to achieve here in the U.S. which is 100,000 to 240,000 deaths

This figure includes two curves, with daily number of influenza cases on the y axis and days since first case on the x axis. One curve shows a pandemic with intervention, and the other curve shows a pandemic without intervention. The curve without intervention begins to slope upward before the curve with intervention and also peaks at a higher point. Goals of community mitigation are shown on the â€œwithout interventionâ€ curve and include 1) slow acceleration of number of cases, 2) reduce peak number of cases and related demands on hospitals and infrastructure, and 3) reduce number of cases overall and health effects.
