Intubated literally means : IN Tube Ated: Tubes are put into your lungs to try to save your life

Where they stick tubes into your lungs knock you  unconscious and a machine  ventilator breathes for you while you are put unconscious because you couldn't deal with this state of affairs otherwise.

So, once you are put unconscious on a ventilator often people never wake up from this who don't make it.
