And my father and I went to the Joshua Tree Retreat Center because he and I built his retirement

home on Yucca Mesa above Yucca Valley and Joshua tree is in between Yucca Valley and 29 Palms
where the Marine Base is. All of them are sort of near Palm Springs which is at a lower elevation
because where my father's land was was about 3500 feet I believe. Because Yucca Valley itself is at
3,369′ (feet) elevation.

So, this was my first real experience through
"My LIfe in Tibet" written by Edwin Dingle who
had actually been there during the early part of the 20th Century long before the Chinese invaded in the 1950s. There was this part where a High Lama held out his hand and grew an orange tree with an orange in it in the
palm of his hand that intrigued me the most.

But, as an adult I found that Tibetan Buddhism as practiced in Tibet and Nepal and in India is really amazing. It isn't that
it isn't amazing here too it's just that most students here in the U.S. are New Agers for the most part whereas how people are there
is very different in that they are very devoted,
when I visited them in Bodhgaya and Dharamshala India and in Kathmandu, Nepal.

The main difference is the students here all come mostly from Christianity and Catholicism is actually more like Tibetan Buddhism than Protestantism is. For example, Gelukpa monks who are the intellectuals like the Dalai Lama are very much like Catholic Priests in some ways but many other sects like Kagyus and Nyingmas often marry and have families that are Tibetan lamas too and I met some of these Tibetan lamas and their families in India. Also, it isn't that buddhists don't believe in God it's just that it's not their emphasis. The emphasis is
on ending suffering and coming to bliss which is considered more important than focusing on God.It's just a completely different approach in Buddhism. And then Tibetan Buddhism is also different because it is the ancient Bon PO religion combined with Buddhism. So, in some ways there is this almost Native American way of laughing at adversity that Tibetans have. Because if you ever had to survive between 8000 to 15,000 feet you are either going to laugh or to cry all
the time trying to survive at those altitudes year around.

So, the emphasis in Buddhism is compassion which could equate to Forgiveness in Christianity. One is taught to find ways to have compassion for the suffering of all beings and taught how to help all beings through prayer and right actions as a Buddhist.

However, because Christianity doesn't recognize any religion that doesn't believe in God or gods. So, Buddhism to Christians is not considered to be a religion but instead a philosophy. So, many Christian Priests and ministers and general Christians all believe in both Christianity and Buddhism because it isn't considered a religion so there is no conflict.

Also, the Joshua Tree Retreat Center
Was designed and built by famous
architect Frank Lloyd Wright.
