I talked to a gentleman today about Oak Meadow School Independent Study

He was telling me how he didn't like the way his local schools were handling online education so I told him how in 1980 at Sisson School in Mt. Shasta, California they had moved the 4th to 6th grades to the Junior high school because of too many kids in Sisson Elementary school then in 1980. So, an 8th Grader in the Junior high immediately broke the jaw of a 4th grader with a punch to the jaw. We withdrew our children from school in protest and moved out to our land which was 2 1/2 acres and finished building our A-Frame house and put all three of our kids on independent Study through Oak Meadow School instead. We kept them on Independent study until the oldest was 12 years old and asked to go back to school. so, we returned to the SF Bay area and bought another business and put all three kids in a good grade school or junior high in a nice area on the coast. Then the oldest finished junior High and the local High School there which was the best in the county where we were. The two younger ones eventually went to Charter school and decided to get a GED eventually and then went to college and graduated with degrees. The girl became a lawyer and the boy got a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and I think the older son got a degree and became a Fire Captain for CDF here in California, fighting Wildland fires all over California and sometimes he went to other states with his engines as a Fire Captain too and is now retired from being a fire captain and married in another state now he has retired.

So, for us putting our kids on independent study like this from 1980 until 1985 was very successful for all of them and for us too. Love of learning and studying what you are most interested in and providing day trips for kids to learn things they are interested in was very helpful in this too. For example, one year we took a vacation to Banff and Jasper in Canada and another year when my oldest stepson graduated High school he won an Audabon camp scholarship to Wyoming at a remote camp so we drove our window van then to Wyoming and while he was at the camp the rest of us backpacked into Teton national park and saw Moose and Elk and all sorts of amazing things and grizzly bears and Marmots and all sorts of fun things.

So, using your vacations to increase knowledge seeking for your kids can be very helpful in their chosen majors in college and in their professions in life and in them getting college degrees and becoming successful in their lives.
