They were talking about a park called Toro Park which was in the River Fire (the surface of which is out now) and saying that they simply cannot open the park because most of it burnt off and there are still coaling pockets in fallen trees as well as ash pits where if you stepped into them since they are at 2000 degrees that you would lose their leg that went into that coaling ash pit. We are having these kinds of problems all over California because of all the fires.
It's not that these coaling places will go on throughout the winter like they do underground in Siberia even when the top few feet of ground are solid ice in the Tundra. That's not the problem here. However, it is possible for fires to continue coaling for up to 6 months if it isn't raining at all here in California. So, let's say you have a fire in June or July or August of 2020. That fire could be following fallen trees and underground roots for the next 6 months and come up and start another fire 6 months later. That actually happens not only in California but many places around the world.
This problem is sooo bad in Siberia that many of the fires never go out and keep burning for years and years at a time. They go underground during the winters and come up and start burning on the surface in the open air every spring and summer and fall. There are literally hundreds of fires that burn year around now in Siberia and never go out for years at a time.
And this problem is likely going to get worse and worse over time in Siberia because of Methane being released in Siberia from underground and under ice. All it takes is one person walking above smoking a cigarette and they are blown up and killed or injured and another fire has started that won't possible ever go out now in Siberia. It could also be started by a campfire setting off methane rising into the air any time of the year in Siberia too. As more people go further north this is going to be a worse and worse problem by the way. And lightning strikes are going to set off methane too in Siberia more and more as well.
