You can get giardia here in the U.S. if you drink directly from rivers and streams that have been contaminated by deer, or cattle or other animals feces

So, if you are going to drink from rivers, lakes or streams you need to either have the right type of water filter, or boil it or you need to treat it with some kind of chemical that will kill anything in it.

I prefer boiling for over 5 minutes myself because chemical treatments all taste terrible. So, if you are camping boil some water in a pan and let it cool down over night before putting it in your canteen while backpacking or camping in the U.S. Filters might be great but from point of view they are only for absolute emergencies because of all the things that can go wrong with filters.

I only trust reverse osmosis tippets like you see at kitchen sinks at this point after traveling around the world. Otherwise boiling can work most places. If you are in Europe it's a lot like the U.S. where you can trust bottling companies. This is less true other places around the world.
