Bobby Vinton released this song in 1962 so I would have been 14 then. At the time I thought it was a sad song which it was but also an honorable one for a man or boy then to write. In life you might meet the perfect girl at any time in your life but then your life circumstances mean you aren't ready for that yet and by the time you grow up often that girl is married with kids of her own. This happens all the time to people.
Timing is everything in life. And you cannot force timing or you harm everyone's life including your own.
It's just the way that life really is.
